These stylish candles were used around the turn of the century when courting was still fashionable. When the suitor would come courting, papa would light the candle. When the candle burned down to the metal holder, courting time was over. If the young man was rich and showed some promise, papa would set the candle higher to give him more time. If he was a shady looking character, papa set the candle lower, giving him less time with his daughter.
